Quaid-i-Azam University: MPhil Admissions Fall Semester 2010

Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad has invited applications for admission to M.Phil. programs in the faculties of Biological Sciences, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences for Fall Semester 2010.

Eligibility

The candidate must have:

  1. 1st Division in M.A/M.Sc. degree or its equivalent or in B.A./B.Sc. but no 3rd division in M.A./M.Sc. or B.A B.Sc.
  2. In case of 3rd division in F.A/F.Sc., the candidate should have 1st division in both B.A/B.Sc. and M.A/M.Sc.or its equivalent degree.

1) Faculty of Biological Sciences

  1. M.Sc. degree or its equivalent in any field of Biological Sciences from a recognized University. Candidates holding BS/B.Sc. Hons. (4 years), MBBS/DVM/B.Pharmacy/Agriculture 4 years with 1st Division may apply.
  2. The M.Phil Biological Sciences programme offers the following specializations:

3 Biotechnology Medical Genetics, Plant Cell Culture & Bioprocess Technology.
4 Bioinformatics Evolutionary Genomics, Structural Proteomics, Software Development, Functional Genomics, Molecular Modeling
5 Microbiology Applied Microbiology, Environmental Microbiology, Medical Microbiology, Mycology.
6 Plant Sciences Plant Physiology, Plant Taxonomy, Environmental Biology, Molecular Systematic & Applied Ethnobotany, Genetics & Genomics, Plant Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

2) Faculty of Natural Sciences

Sr. Department Requirement
1 Chemistry M.Sc. degree in Chemistry or its equivalent with specialization in Physical or Organic or Inorganic/Analytical Chemistry. Candidates who have studied Mathematics in M.Sc. or B.Sc/F.Sc. will get preference in Physical and Inorganic/Analytical Chemistry.
2 Computer Science M.Sc. in Computer Science or B.S./BCS (4 years) in Computer Science, Software Engineering.
3 Earth Sciences M.Sc. degree or its equivalent in Geophysics/Hydrogeology.
4 Mathematics M.Sc. in Mathematics/Physics or its equivalent degree.
5 Physics M.Sc. in Physics or its equivalent degree.
6 Statistics M.Sc. in Statistics or its equivalent degree

3) Faculty of Social Sciences

Sr. Department / Institute Requirement
1 Anthropology M.A/M.Sc. degree or its equivalent in Anthropology/Sociology.
2 American Studies M.A/M.Sc. degree or its equivalent in American Studies, International Relations, Political Science, Defence & Strategic Studies, History, Pakistan Studies, English Literature, Anthropology, Sociology & Economics.
3 Defence & Strategic Studies M.A/M.Sc. degree or its equivalent in Defence & Strategic Studies, Security/ War Studies, Political Science, International Relations, Defence & Diplomatic Studies.
4 History M.A/M.Sc. in History.
5 International Relations M.A/M.Sc. degree or its equivalent in International Relations, Political Science, Defence and Strategic Studies. Those engaged in teaching or research in the above disciplines may also apply.
6 Pakistan Studies M.A/M.Sc. in Pakistan Studies or any Social Science subject or its equivalent degree.
7 Psychology M.A/M.Sc. or its equivalent degree in Psychology/Applied Psychology/Behavioral Sciences or in a relevant discipline from any recognized University.

Admission Schedule

The Admission Form can be obtained from the office of the Assistant Registrar (Admissions) for Rs.650 by hand or by sending self addressed envelope of 8.5 x 11 (inches) along with a Bank Draft of Rs.700/- in favor of the Treasurer, Quaid-i-Azam University.

Three copies of application on prescribed forms duly supported by the attested Photostat copies of the certificates of academic qualifications, domicile, character, detailed marks, migration (in original) along with 5 (five) passport size photographs and No Objection Certificate from the employer, in case of in-service candidates, should reach the Chairman/Director of the respective Department/Institute/Centre by August 10, 2010 during office hours.

Written tests will be held in the respective Department/Institute according to the following schedule:

The date and time of interview shall be announced by each Department/Institute/Centre after the test. No separate call up letter for test/interview will be issued. Hostel accommodation will only be provided, if available. Applications that are incomplete or received after due date shall not be entertained.

NUST: Workshops on Research Methodology and SPSS

Professional Development Center (PDC), National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) is organizing a two days workshops on Research Methodology and Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).

Research Methodology

Research is the cornerstone for searching systematically about solutions to problems. Systematic collection and analysis of data forms the basis of any quality research work.

Research methodology is procedural framework derived on the basis of methodology used with specific research question being the prime driver. Research may be classified as either quantitative or qualitative. PDC-NUST has planned a two days workshop on this topic for assisting researchers in this area.

Take Away from this Workshop

The workshop will analyze the different research methodologies for considering the most appropriate research option and paradigm with respect to research question being probed.

Who Should Attend?

Researchers of social sciences in the fields of psychology, sociology, management, education, medicine and healthcare will benefit most from this workshop. Faculty members and students of social sciences are strongly encouraged to attend.

Workshop on Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS)

SPSS is a statistical analysis software most widely applied in social sciences. It is used for research work by businesses, healthcare professionals, survey companies, government, students and educational institutions. Data management is its additional feature.

Course is specially designed to enable participants to understand different types of variables, distribution of data, SPSS commands, different statistical tests, SPSS output and its interpretation.

Take Away from this Workshop

Hands on practical training on “SPSS Version 17” will be imparted to empower participants to test hypothesis, carryout statistical analyses, understand causal relationship between interdependent and dependent variables, analyze, and present their findings.

Course will be of immense help for those who have designed the questionnaire, collected their project data, and are in the phase of writing dissertation or publication
